A Short Course on Data Analysis Using R Software

About the course: This is an applied course on data analysis. In the course, participants will acquire skills to manage, visualize and analyse data. In addition to that, they will learn to interpret and present statistical results following recommended guidelines. The course will use R and RStudio software. Real datasets will be used to simulate actual data analysis. The concept of confounding and interaction in the statistical modelling will also be briefly discussed. The analysis focuses on General and Generalized Linear Models. However, statistical notation and formulae will be kept at minimum.

About R and RStudio: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. R is an integrated suite of software facilities for data manipulation, calculation and graphical display. It includes an effective data handling and storage facility, a large, coherent, integrated collection of intermediate tools for data analysis and graphical facilities for data analysis.

 

 

 

 

RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for R. It includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor that supports direct code execution, as well as tools for plotting, history, debugging and workspace management.

  6. General linear model (Linear regression)
  7. Generalized linear model (Logistic regression, Poisson regression, Cox proportional hazard)

About the instructors:

Associate Professor Dr Kamarul Imran and Dr Wan Arifin are senior medical lecturers at the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Both instructors have more than 15 years of experience between them in teaching and supervising post-graduate students in the Msc of Medical Statistics and epidemiology speciality of Doctor of Public Health programmes. They have used SPSS and Stata proficiently before migrating to R extensively in their research and teaching. Both are experienced journal reviewer and currently act as the statistical editors in a Scopus-indexed journal.

Number of participants and requirement: To ensure participants receive full attention and guidance, the course will only accommodate 20 participants. Participants must bring their own laptops.
